EMBROIDERY FLOSS EGGS

Last Easter, I came across this cute idea for Easter eggs made out of embroidery floss on Pinterest. They turned out so cute that I will be making more this year for sure! I've had this on my list of things to post on here for quite a while, but never got around to it. So here it is (10 months late or 4 months early, however you want to look at it).

 

WHAT YOU NEED:

*Liquid Starch  (I used Sta-Flo...you can find it in the laundry isle of most stores)

*Flour

*Water balloons

*Embroidery Floss (in multiple colors)

 

WHAT YOU DO:

 

To get started, in a bowl combine about 1 cup of liquid starch and 1/2 cup of flour. Mix well until it is smooth and there are no flour lumps. Once your mixture is ready, blow up several water balloons. (It is important to note: fill the balloons with AIR and not water. Using water will distort the shape as they dry and when you pop the balloon the water will ruin the egg).

 

Once the balloons are ready it's time to prepare the thread.  One small balloon should only need one skein of embroidery floss.  First, stir the starch mixture again (and between each balloon, as the mixture thickens as it stands).  Next, place the thread into the mixture. (NOTE: When putting the thread in mixture, coil it in a circle slowly as you place it into the mixture. Do not just drop it in the liquid starch because it will get tangled and knotted while sitting in the mixture. Once the thread is tangled, it's ruined.) Gently push the coiled thread down into the starch.

 

Next, wrap the string around the balloon in all different directions. Make sure as you wrap the string around the balloon that you are wiping any excess liquid off of the thread.  You do not want the thread dripping or with globs of the starch liquid on it. If it does have too much starch on the thread you will get crusty white stuff between the thread when you pop the balloon. If this happens it's ok, you can just scrape it off with a pin.

 

 

 



 

Once the balloon is wrapped, place it onto a piece of parchment paper to dry. It takes several hours for the string to dry completely. I recommend letting it dry overnight.

 

Once the thread is completely dry, pop the balloon with a pin. If you have any areas of crusty white dried starch, just scrape it off with the pin.

 

And now you have super cute Easter eggs in bright colors.  I placed several in a bowl for a table decoration.  I have also seen on pinterest some people stringing them together to make garland and several other ideas. Whatever you choose to use them for, I'm sure you will love them!
